John Downton studied at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales, Australia with teachers Kenneth Green, Allan Hanson, Arthur Murch and with a private teacher, George Duncan, plus many years painting with Master Artist Leonard Long.
John has won many prestigious prizes, some several times. He was the first artist ever to exhibit at the State Mitchell Library, Sydney, Australia, for their Bicentennial Celebrations. He has also won many Japanese cultural awards and citations. He had an exhibition in Ireland for Dublin’s official celebration having been chosen as cultural city 1991. John was sent by the Australian Navy to East Timor as a navy artist in 2000 and he is Honorary Member of the Fleet Air Arm Association of Australia; a Fellow of the Royal Art Society; the Bega Art Society and the Australian Society of Marine Artists.
John is a commercial fisherman and knows the sea well.
