Alan Nakano

West Coast artist Alan Nakano spent his formative years among boats, working as crew each summer on his father’s fishing boat. Following his graduation from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and a career as an Art Director for a large national advertising agency, Alan has pursued his goal to paint full-time. Alan’s early exposure to the sea and ships is evident in his tasteful marine paintings. With a meticulous eye for detail and an authentic grasp of naval architecture, his paintings strike beautiful balance between ship and setting.

His limited-edition prints now grace homes and offices of collectors and enthusiasts throughout North America. Holland America Line Westours has commissioned several original paintings and purchased an entire body of his work for its shipboard art collection. In 2000, Alan’s initial entry to Mystic Seaport’s International Marine Art Exhibition won an Award of Excellence, and in 2003 he was honored to be the recipient of both the Mystic Seaport Museum Purchase award and the newly inaugurated David Thimgan Memorial Award. His work now resides in the permanent collection of Mystic Seaport.
