Charles Sharpe, who has been painting since the early 1970′s, is a self-taught watercolor and oil painter who divides his time between Durham, NC, and Morehead City, NC, where he maintains studios. He is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA), Southern Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of North Carolina and Watercolor West and Whiskey Painters of America.
His paintings have been included in the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors in 1992, and in 2003 & 2009 winning the Pulsifer Award; the California Watercolor Association 40th National Exhibition in 2009 in San Francisco; Southern Watercolor Society received the Merit Award, in the 15th & 17th Annual Southern Watercolor Exhibitions, Traveling Exhibition to Japan and their annual exhibitions, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, 18th and 32nd. He exhibited in the Transparent Watercolor Society Annual Juried Exhibition in 2010 and 2011 in Kenosha, WI. He participated in exhibits at the N.C. State Fair where he won First, Second and Best of Show awards. Two of his watercolors are published in the book Best of Watercolor: Painting Light and Shadow, and one of his watercolors has been selected for publication in the book Splash 11.
His work is included in numerous private and corporate collections. For over 30 years, Charles has served as juror for several art exhibitions and has conducted watercolor workshops in which fundamentals of transparent watercolor are taught, stressing the use of sketches to produce complete and successful paintings.
Charles served as Southern Watercolor Society President for 1995/96 and as Vice President for 1993/94. He is a Life Member of the Watercolor Society of N.C. and was Treasurer for 1985 and Vice President for 1988/89. Charles may be contacted via email.
