David W. Smith

Born in Rhode Island, David Smith has spent nearly his entire life on or by the sea. His interest in and love of sailing lends honesty to the nautical themes of his work. Stipplings is the technique David uses almost exclusively to produce fully shaded subjects with considerable accuracy and softness. His aim is toward a more narrative approach to his scrimshaw as opposed to a strictly decorative one. He seeks to communicate a story, or capture a moment in time. The mountings for David’s scrimshaw are carefully designed and crafted by the artist himself, making the completed piece uniquely his, from start to finish.
