Introduction to Navigation
This four-session class will familiarize you with terrestrial navigation and piloting. No previous navigational knowledge is required. The class will include practice problems to be completed at home and please expect to spend up to 5 hours per week on out of class work. Registration fee includes chart and plotting tools for hands-on experience. Classes will be held November 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Session 1:
- Introduction to terrestrial navigation, the chart and tools (triangles, parallel rules, compass)
- Geographic coordinates
- Measuring distance on a chart
- Compass errors – magnetic and variation
- Problems to work on at home
Session 2:
- Review of Session 1 topics, questions
- Dead reckoning – speed, time and distance calculations
- Aids to navigation / Chart No. 1
- Calculating set and drift
- Problems to work on at home
Session 3:
- Review of Session 1 and 2 topics, questions
- Determining CMG, SMG
- Radar ranges
- Plotting a fix with two or more bearings
- Problems to work on at home
Session 4:
- Review of previous topics, questions
- Running fix
- In-class practice
