Introduction to Observing the Night Sky
A four-hour class with the objective to present students with the knowledge needed to get started in nighttime astronomical observations. The course emphasizes reading celestial charts, identifying constellations in the planetarium theater, and using traditional and modern tools (bring your “smart” device) to plan observations sessions.
This course is intended to be hands-on and, weather permitting (a rain date will be scheduled if necessary), will end with an observation session using the Treworgy Planetarium telescopes. While not a requirement, students who own binoculars and telescopes are encouraged to bring them to class. There will be opportunity for brief discussion of astronomical theory but it will not be the focus of the coursework
