SUMMARY:Teaching With Small Boats Alliance Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Teaching with Small Boats Alliance (TWSBA) will host its 2013 conference at Mystic Seaport. This year's conference is geared toward maritime organizations and educators who use small boats as teaching tools. The four-day gathering facilitates collaboration and idea sharing among organizations and individuals who teach math and science through hands-on boat building projects. TWSBA's mission is to support an alliance of organizations that give young people an awareness of and resulting pride in their learning potential. This is accomplished through the hands-on study of the maritime arts\, its history\, and its relationship to success in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. TWSBA works to improve the effectiveness of its member organizations by sharing information and best practices that promote the values of scholarship\, craftsmanship\, ingenuity\, self-discipline\, and a true sense of accomplishment. The 2012 conference drew 90 participants who shared best practices from their programs through hands-on workshops and formal presentations. Organizers are incorporating feedback from last year's conference to address a wider range of subjects\, from support for start-ups to workforce development\, and have added an additional day to allow for more hands-on workshops and small group interaction.

SUMMARY:CHARLES W. MORGAN Mast Stepping
DESCRIPTION:The1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan is taking an important step in her journey back to sea on Thursday\, October 17\, when the staff at the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport will begin the process of stepping the masts. The moment will be marked by a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Shipyard to present the coins that will be placed under the masts. The ship was de-rigged and had its masts and spars removed at the outset of the restoration in 2008. Re-installing the masts\, known as “stepping” in nautical terminology\, is an important occasion during a ship’s construction. Maritime tradition holds that a coin should be placed under the base of a mast for good luck. To mark significant events in the Morgan’s history\, three coins have been selected for placement: 1841 U.S. Silver Dollar – Representing the original launch of the Morgan. 1941 U.S. Silver Half-Dollar – Signifying the ship’s arrival at Mystic Seaport. 2013 U.S. Silver Dollar – Symbolizing the current restoration. The coins will replace the three coins that were removed when the previous masts were taken out in 2008. They were a 1908 Barber Silver Half Dollar\, an Eisenhower Silver Dollar dating from 1971-1977 (corrosion made it impossible to read the specific year)\, and a 1997 U.S. Silver Dollar. Each coin signifies a mast replacement during the Morgan’s career. Stepping the masts is an extensive process that will take place on two separate days: the foremast will be stepped on October 17 and the main and mizzen masts are scheduled to be stepped on October 31. The ceremony will take place prior to the stepping of the foremast and will give visitors an opportunity to see the coins before they are taken below\, and to witness an historic event as the first mast gets lifted into position.

SUMMARY:Fall PILOTS Weekend
DESCRIPTION: Established in 1973\, the Mystic Seaport PILOTS program was designed to give members a greater understanding of the Museum’s day-to-day operations. Working as a team to accomplish a variety of work projects\, PILOTS receive special insight and behind-the-scenes views of Mystic Seaport as they work along side Museum staff. Saturday begins with a hearty breakfast and job assignments\, followed by a morning of work. The PILOTS break at lunchtime to catch their breath and refuel and then it is back to work in the afternoon. Jobs typically conclude around 3:30 or 4 p.m. so the PILOTS corps and staff can catch a break and freshen up before the "attitude adjustment hour\," a.k.a. cocktails\, begins at 5:30 p.m. A buffet dinner is served and this is followed by a slide talk or other presentation by a Museum staff member about new projects\, exhibits or other Mystic Seaport news. For those who stay overnight for Sunday\, the day begins with a continental breakfast followed by a PILOTS-led chapel service in the Fishtown Chapel. At around 10 a.m.\, a behind-the-scenes tour or hands-on activity is lead by a Museum staff member to help give the PILOTS a deeper understanding about the depth and breadth of Mystic Seaport.

SUMMARY:Dyer Dhow Derby
DESCRIPTION:Visitors are invited to cheer on the Museum's fleet of Dyer Dhows and their crews as they race along the Mystic River at the 64th Annual Dyer Dhow Derby at Mystic Seaport. The regatta is held annually in appreciation for the yacht clubs\, organizations\, and individuals who have donated and maintained a Dyer Dhow in support of the Joseph Conrad and Community Sailing programs at Mystic Seaport. Dyer Dhow Fleet Mystic Seaport currently has more than 50 Dhows\, of which 48 are sailed regularly\, giving Mystic Seaport the distinction of having the largest fleet of Dyer Dhows in North America. The Dhows are used year-round for teaching sailing to the local community\, as an integral part of the Joseph Conrad Overnight Sailing Camp and in the racing series. Each Dyer Dhow is named for the yacht club\, family\, or individual who generously donated it to the Museum's sailing program. It is through these generous donations that Mystic Seaport’s sailing programs have continued to grow\, teaching hundreds of people annually--young and old alike--to capture the wind in their sails and enjoy their time at sea.

SUMMARY:Celestial Navigation: 19th-Century Methods
DESCRIPTION:This is a weekend introductory class in basic celestial navigation emphasizing the actual historical methods that were used in the Age of Sail\, especially aboard whaling vessels like the Charles W. Morgan. Students will learn how it was done and how to apply these same methods today. Attendees will learn how to use and adjust sextants and octants\, both historical instruments and their modern equivalents. The class covers the classic method of finding latitude by "noon sun" and students will also learn in detail the math of the "time sight" which was used to determine longitude from the 19th through the middle of the 20th century. Throughout the class\, students will compare what they're doing with actual logbook entries and calculations from the Museum's collections. Weather permitting\, students will have opportunities to make actual sextant observations. This is real navigation\, not just a class "about" navigation. Fast and intense\, students who complete this weekend class will have the basic celestial navigation skills to cross any ocean using the sun\, a sextant\, and a few other simple tools. Requirements: good math skills and especially a familiarity with the basic geometry of angles\, including degrees and minutes of arc. A familiarity with 24-hour time (16:00 is 4:00 p.m.). A good understanding of latitude and longitude on the globe. Unlike our "easy introductory" class\, this course offers a more historical and more mathematical approach to celestial navigation. SUMMARY:Easy Introductory Celestial Navigation: Latitude and Longitude by Noon Sun
DESCRIPTION:A class in the basic principles of celestial navigation from a modern perspective designed especially for yachtsmen and recreational boaters\, but also appropriate for anyone interested in a quick introduction to celestial navigation. Celestial navigation is the ultimate backup when the electronics fail\, and it is a tradition that connects us with maritime history. Students will learn how to adjust and use sextants available on the market today. This class covers the classic\, time-honored method of finding latitude by the noon sun\, as well as finding longitude by observations of the sun before and after noon (including frequently neglected corrections for statistics and the motion of the observer). Weather permitting\, students will be able to try it for real and measure the sun’s altitude around noon (from a nearby shore location) to determine latitude and longitude. This is real navigation\, not just a class “about” navigation. Fast and intense\, students who complete this weekend class will have the basic celestial navigation skills to cross any ocean using the sun\, a sextant\, and a few other simple tools. Requirements: good basic arithmetic skills\, but nothing beyond addition and subtraction. A familiarity with the basic geometry of angles\, including degrees and minutes of arc. A familiarity with 24-hour time (16:00 is 4:00 p.m.). A good understanding of latitude and longitude on the globe. Instructor: Frank Reed of Reed Navigation

SUMMARY:CHARLES W. MORGAN Day
DESCRIPTION:Free admission for all visitors! Join us as we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the arrival of the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan to Mystic Seaport by offering free admission to all Museum visitors on November 9\, 2013. The anniversary recognizes the importance the Charles W. Morgan has had in the development of Mystic Seaport and the community since she was towed up the river on November 8\, 1941. The Morgan is the last wooden whaleship from the Age of Sail and is the oldest American commercial vessel still afloat. After an 80-year whaling career\, the ship was at risk of being broken up when she was offered to the infant Marine Historical Association (now Mystic Seaport). The acquisition of the ship raised the stature of the Museum significantly and helped put Mystic on the map of tourist destinations. More than 20 million people have come to Mystic and walked her decks since 1941. Launched this past July after being out of the water for nearly five years\, the Morgan is now undergoing the final phase of her restoration. This includes rigging\, restoring the whaleship's interior\, and installing temporary systems necessary to take her back to sea for a ceremonial 38th Voyage in late May 2014. Visitors are invited to climb aboard this National Historic Landmark vessel and get an up-close look at a piece of American history. Special shipwright talks and tours of the Morgan will add to the day's festivities.

SUMMARY:Book Signing with George C. Daughan
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning historian George C. Daughan returns to Mystic Seaport November 10-11 to sign copies of his new book\, The Shining Sea: David Porter and the Epic Voyage of the U.S.S. Essex during the War of 1812. Overview: A few months after the outbreak of the War of 1812\, Captain David Porter set out in the USS Essex on an epic\, 17-month cruise to the South Seas. Porter was pursuing fame and riches\, and by most accounts his odyssey was a stunning success: it brought glory to the fledgling American navy\, cemented Porter’s reputation as a daring and talented commander\, and has long been celebrated as one of the greatest maritime adventures in U.S. history. Less well known\, however\, is the terrible price that the crew of the Essex paid for their captain’s outsized ambitions. In The Shining Sea\, Daughan tells the full story of Porter’s thrilling\, action-packed voyage\, revealing the heights of Porter’s hubris and the true depths of his failure on this fateful cruise. Intent on achieving personal glory\, Porter made the treacherous journey around Cape Horn and into the Pacific Ocean\, where he planned to capture a British man-of-war. From Valparaiso to the Galapagos to the Marquesas\, the Essex roamed the South Seas\, seizing British whaling and merchant ships\, wreaking havoc on British commerce\, and earning Porter and his men wealth and acclaim. Flush with his victories\, Porter welcomed the news that a British frigate—the HMS Phoebe—was on his tail\, and he resolved to capture her. But Porter could not overcome the Phoebe’s superior firepower. Over the course of a desperate\, bloody battle\, he lost the Essex and over two-thirds of her crew—a shocking end to a daring journey. A swashbuckling tale of risk and ruin on the high seas\, The Shining Sea brings to life the monomaniacal quest of one of the most misunderstood commanders of the War of 1812. Porter’s singular voyage\, Daughan shows\, stands as a cautionary tale for any leader who would put personal glory and ambition ahead of cause and countrymen.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Celestial Navigation: Star Sights and Lines of Position
DESCRIPTION:This is an excellent sequel to our Easy Introductory Celestial Navigation class. In this course\, students will learn more about the use of the sextant and will learn the traditional "twilight round" of star sights for determining a vessel's position by plotting lines of position and working with "H.O. 249" sight reduction tables. Students will also learn traditional shortcuts for locating the brighter navigational stars under the dome of the Treworgy Planetarium. Students will be provided with the necessary plotting tools and digital copies of the sight reduction tables. Requirements: an introductory course or equivalent in the use of a sextant and other basic techniques in celestial navigation. Instructor: Frank Reed of Reed Navigation

SUMMARY:Maritime Author Series with Mark J. Gabrielson
DESCRIPTION:Mark J. Gabrielson - Deer Isle’s Undefeated America’s Cup Crews Mark J. Gabrielson first visited Deer Isle\, Maine\, as a teenager and later his family built a summer home there. Like all Deer Islers\, Mark had heard the story of the crews who were recruited by the New York Yacht Club cutters in the late 1800s. Despite their local fame\, there was no well-researched version of their story. Controversy and legal dispute surround the crews who labored largely in historical silence. Based on research at Mystic Seaport\, among other places\, Gabrielson’s book tells the whole story of the famous Deer Isle crews of 1895 and 1899\, and finally gives the island heroes the credit that they deserve. From the book jacket: In 1895\, emissaries from the New York Yacht Club traveled to Deer Isle\, Maine\, to recruit the nation’s best sailors\, an “All American” crew. This remote island in Penobscot Bay sent nearly forty of its fishing men to sail Defender\, and under skipper Hank Haff\, they beat their opponents in a difficult and controversial series. To the delight of the American public\, the charismatic Sir Thomas Lipton sent a surprise challenge in 1899. The New York Yacht Club knew where to turn and again recruited Deer Isle’s fisherman sailors. Undefeated in two defense campaigns\, they are still among the best American sail racing team ever assembled.

SUMMARY:Adventure Series: South Georgia in the Wake of the Whale
DESCRIPTION:Thies Matzen's presentation will take us on an exploration of South Georgia and will detail this island of superlatives--a glaciated Himalaya protruding from a storm-torn ocean and a Serengeti in Antarctic climes. Its coasts\, in summer\, hold the highest density of birds and mammals on this planet. It is one of the ultimate meeting points of bird and sea life on earth. Blue Water medalists Thies Matzen and Kicki Ericson stayed on South Georgia for 26 months – through two winters – living aboard their iconic 30' wooden sailboat Wanderer III. Industrial whaling – this fateful interaction between our planet’s most intelligent and its largest inhabitant – started in South Georgia. Half a century later\, its whaling stations are succumbing to the forces of nature. The island is now taking the lead in changing its legacy from exploitation to rehabilitation. Frank\, founder and director of the Scrimshaw Forensics Laboratory®\, has recently published a new book on the occupational art of scrimshaw in the Age of Sail. The book presents 406 biographical sketches of the men and women who engraved\, carved\, decorated\, and built things out of sperm whale teeth and other whaling products\, walrus ivory\, and skeletal bone during their off-hours. Their folk-art charmingly reflects on the interests\, concerns\, and artistic aspirations of mariners and their families on voyages to distant seas and exotic foreign lands.

SUMMARY:Adventure Series - Raising Whales: How Cetaceans are Helping Restore the Oceans
DESCRIPTION:Joe Roman\, author of Whale and a conservation biologist\, has tracked whales from the Bay of Fundy to the sushi bars of Japan. He will discuss his examination of the history and future of whales in the modern ocean\, using DNA technology and the collection of fecal plumes. Before the age of industrial whaling\, cetaceans exerted significant influences on marine ecosystems\, not only as consumers of fish\, but also by pumping nutrients to the surface\, increasing ocean productivity. After death\, whale falls bring massive pulses of nutrients to the deep sea\, sequester carbon\, and provide habitat and food for many deep sea creatures. Whales are now recovering after centuries of commercial harvest. Joe will discuss these restoration efforts and how great whales can help maintain the health and resilience of the oceans. Bourque - The Swordfish Hunters Bruce Bourque\, Maine State Museum chief archaeologist and professor of anthropology at Bates College\, explores the mysterious Red Paint People\, one of the first maritime cultures in America thousands of years ago. They could have subsisted on easily caught cod\, but they chose to capture dangerous and elusive swordfish. They buried their dead in graves filled with a brilliant red powder. These people mysteriously vanished. The author interweaves archaeological research with his own intellectual discoveries to shed light on this remarkable prehistoric culture in Maine.
