Biography
Donald Demres
One of the leaders of the new generation of marine artists, DON DEMERS has had a life-long love of the sea. Although he attributes his high school art teacher with being the most formative influence in his training, he attended the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts, and concluded his formal studies at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Experience as a crew member on several traditional sailing vessels allows him to bring to life these ships of a bygone era with breathtaking accuracy. Don's work has been featured in a number of publications including Yachting magazine, Nautical Quarterly, Offshore magazine, Maine Boats and Harbors, and an instructional text book entitled Marine Painting: Techniques of Modern Masters published by Watson Guptill. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists and the Society of Illustrators. Over the years Don has won eleven awards at the International Marine Art Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT; including the Stobart Foundation Award, 2009, the Yachting Award, 2008, Awards of Excellence in 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996, the Thomas M. Hoyne Award in 1990.
