In his younger days, his summers were spent on Cape Cod sailing a 12 foot wooden cat boat out of Scorton Creek in East Sandwich and along Sandy Neck beach. Later years brought a varied assortment of small craft including a 16' wooden Town Class, a 26' ketch-rigged Chesapeake Bay Sharpie, a 15' Marshal Sandpiper, a 30' Tartan, a 18' wooden Novi, a 15' Whaler, assorted small outboards, sea kayaks and dinghies, and now a flat bottomed 15' Stur-Dee skiff which he finds perfect for poking in and out of nooks and crannies along the coast. Bernie has had some experience with larger boats too having spent time aboard the JOHN CABOT a Canadian ice breaker; The USBCF ALBATROSS, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institutes’s submersible, ALVIN . He studied at Tufts and Yale, and exhbitis in galleries up and down the East Coast. His paintings are in collections from Florida to Maine and he has also received numerous awards over the years. When he began his art career, he hoped to create, with canvas, oils and brush, what was missing from a photograph. He has always liked the impressionists, especially Monet, Pissarro and Cezanne and, the post-impressionist, Seurat for his innovative use of color and structure of composition. For the past 25 years, Bernie has lived at the edge of a salt marsh in Duxbury, Massachusett with his wife Pam. When not painting, he is usually clamming, fishing or puttering around with his boat.
