Born in Stratford, England in 1948, JOHN STEWART began drawing and painting ships at an early age when his parents and he moved to the coast of Newhaven, Sussex in 1954. In 1971 he received a first class degree in painting at Brighton and Liverpool Colleges of Art & Design. Following college, he spent two years at sea with Deep Sea Voyages to Lagos, Mombassa, Karachi and other ports. By this time, he had begun painting the sea and drawing ships in earnest. In 1974 he worked on a costal trawler out of Newhaven. In the eighties and nineties John exhibited at various galleries in London and Amsterdam, including the RSMA annual exhibitions. Some of his paintings are found in permanent collections including: The Maritime Museum, Hamburg, The Maritime Museum of Taiwan, The Ocean Liner Museum, New York and The Lloyds Register of Shipping, London. In addition his paintings have been sold at Christies in London and Amsterdam. Besides painting, John spends his time teaching Art & Design.
