| Charles W. Morgan: Songs the Whalemen SangGale Huntington was a man of rare parts. A man of the New England coast, he spent most of his life on Martha's Vineyard. Among the many accomplishments of his long, remarkable life was the 1964 publication of the book Songs the Whalemen Sang. Huntington researched songs written in the journals and diaries of men who made their living on whaling ships. He compiled the songs into a collection used ever since by scholars, researchers, musicians and historians, and widely considered a primary resource on the subject. As part of our Charles W. Morgan celebration, Mystic Seaport has republished Songs the Whalemen Sang. We also published the first edition of The Gam, Huntington's unpublished but completed second volume manuscript; and released a compact disc collection with songs from both volumes. The Gam and CD collection were released in June 2006 as part of our annual Sea Music Festival. With these special musical projects, Mystic Seaport hopes to make these songs available to a new generation of people who learn from and delight in the sounds of sea music and the lives of the people who produced them. Available in the Mystic Seaport Web Store.
