John Ruseau
John Ruseau loves drawing and painting. You can see it in his work: the sharp shadows, the rich colors, the simple, strong compositions, and the complexity of detail. John's unique style developed in large part from his early training as an architect brought up in the Beaux Art tradition. In 1961, John left architecture to join the University of Virginia's faculty, where he taught graphic design and watercolor rendering for 32 years. He helped students see, create and communicate visually. Each summer, John sailed and painted all along the Atlantic coast, taking an occasional trip to tour Europe on his motorcycle, where he painted smaller works to fit inside his saddlebags. After John retired in 1994, he focused on his art fulltime and eventually opened two successful galleries. Now, John's more than 2,500 paintings accumulated during those summers have been purchased by collectors all over the world.
