Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana Perform
"Sempri amMari: Traditional Sicilian Songs to the Sea"
Join us for an evening rich in song and culture. The musical tradition of Sicily includes many songs that speak of the sea, sing its praises, or are sung by those whose work connects them to the water. Together, acclaimed musicians Michela Musolino and Vincenzo Castellana, pay tribute to Sicily's sea through their music. Musolino, a vocalist known for her performances of Sicilian Roots Music, and Castellana, a noted percussionist of the Sicilian drumming tradition, have created a work of song, percussion and recitations which illustrates the intimate connection of Sicily, its history and its culture to the sea which surrounds it.
Peter Covino, PEN America prizewinning poet, and University of Rhode Island Assistant Professor of English, summed up Musolino's appeal on both sides of the Atlantic: "Can you imagine the wild soulfulness of Tina Turner and the earthy yet ethereal voice of Neapolitan songstress Teresa De Sio combined? Well imagine that; then think even more vibrancy, more urbanity, in songs that somehow also feel impossibly intimate... No wonder Michela Musolino has such a devoted underground following; full divahood seems scarily within reach."
The concert will be held at the Museum's Greenmanville Church. Tickets are $20 per adult (member adult: $15) and $15 per youth (member youth: $10).
Purchase tickets online or at the Museum's Visitor Reception Center the evening of the concert. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Ticket proceeds to benefit the 2013 Sea Music Festival at Mystic Seaport.
