Youth (Junior) Community Sailing (Ages 8-14)
(Are you 15 or older? Click here for adult sailing>>
Youth community sailing at Mystic Seaport is nothing if not, an amazing and unparalleled experience. Where else could be better to learn how to raise the sails and capture the wind than amongst the tall ships of old. As a beginner, intermediate or advanced sailor, youth community sailing programs are age-based and touch on all skill levels. Summer classes are offered daily Monday through Friday for three hours.
While some instruction takes place in a classroom-like setting, the majority of class time is spent on the water in either a Dyer Dhow or JY15. All equipment, except foul-weather gear, is provided. If you already have a personal floatation device (PFD), please bring your own.
Beginner youth classes build confidence in boat handling through repeated on-the-water practice. The basics of water safety and wind, boat control using the main sheet and tiller, and sailing maneuvers such as tacking and jibing are taught by experienced, certified instructors.
Intermediate youth classes refine the basic sailing skills by learning more about how a sailboat reacts to wind and water currents. Sailing savvy is increased through discussions on safety, rule of the road as well as upwind and downwind sailing.
To enroll in youth community sailing classes, students must be between the ages of 8 and 14 and must have a parent or guardian sign a health and registration form.
