An Election

Since early May, the management team at Mystic Seaport has been dealing with an effort by some of our employees to unionize through the AFT Connecticut. A petition was filed with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of all of the employees on July 6, and a secret ballot vote has been scheduled for August 17, when the employees will decide whether or not to accept representation by AFT.

We are convinced that unionization is not in the best interests of our employees or the Museum. We believe that it will alter the way we manage the Museum, affect the very nature of our community, and disrupt our independent relationships with our employees.

Currently, we are educating all employees to the fullest extent possible, so that they can cast a ballot as informed voters. Meetings are being held to answer questions and to provide facts, as we believe an educated and informed employee will conclude that a union is not in his or her best interest. Each employee at the end of the day, of course, is entitled to his or her own opinion on this matter.

What hasn't changed over these past two and a half months is the dedication and commitment that all of our employees continue to show our visitors and members. They remain committed to providing an engaging experience that is both memorable and rewarding. Visitors continue to enjoy the diversity of experiences enhanced by the breadth of knowledge displayed by our staff and volunteers. Protecting this experience is of paramount importance to us all.

I thank you for your continued support and faith in the Museum and our mission to inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience. August is one of the busiest months of the year, and we hope that you will avail yourselves of the many opportunities we provide for a meaningful family or individual experience.
