Demonstrations & Performances
Mystic Seaport is a living maritime museum complete with real 19th-century buildings and historical interpreters. Our interpreters exhibit a wide range of skills and talents that truly bring the museum to life. You'll watch as certain interpreters demonstrate music of the sea while others demonstrate maritime skills. Also, during our warmer months you can enjoy an interactive performance demonstrating what it was like to be a young person at sea. Finally, be on the lookout for our Roleplayers who stroll the grounds in full-costume as a townsperson of a 19th-century maritime village!
As you enter the grounds of Mystic Seaport, be sure to pick up a copy of our Daily Schedule, so you don't miss the chance to see maritime skills in action. Remember to visit Mystic Seaport often as these demonstrations change frequently!
Traditional maritime skills are demonstrated for visitors during the warmer months by the roving Special Demonstration Squad. They'll demonstrate how the U.S. Life-Saving Service rescued sailors from a damaged ship, how to properly set the sails on a square rigged ship, and more!
![]() | Mystic Seaport employs a number of talented musicians to demonstrate music of the sea and shore. Known as chanteys, this music allowed sailors to coordinate repetitive tasks and keep their spirits high. Keep your ears open as you walk the museum grounds and you might just hear a song by our amazing Chanteymen! |
For a memorable experience, visit Mystic Seaport and seek out our Museum Roleplayers. These reenactors truly embody the historical characters that they represent. We welcome you to visit our 19th-century village and be greeted by Museum Educators wearing authentic recreated clothing from a historical coastal town.
What makes Mystic Seaport's 19th-century village special from other maritime villages is our horse and carriage ride. During our summer season, visitors can climb aboard and take a guided tour of our coastal village. Additional fees apply. |
