Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Arts Center present...

Anatomy of the Boat

October 3-4
9am - 4pm at Mystic Seaport

An intensive drawing workshop on how to create beautiful, believable boats Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday, October 4, 9am - 4pm at the Mystic Seaport.

Instructor: J. Susan Cole Stone
Rain date: Saturday, October 17

Come spend two days with Mystic Arts Center drawing instructor, Susan Stone, at picturesque Mystic Seaport Museum and learn to create accurate drawings directly from observation of a wide selection of historic watercraft. Students will learn how to render boats in the third dimension, how to make them sit perfectly in water, and how to draw rigging, sails, and all the bells and whistles through the use of perspective, line, value, form and texture. Students can choose from simple dories, the catboat Breck Marshall, the graceful Gloucester fishing schooner, the L.A. Dunton or the treasured symbol of Mystic Seaport - The Charles W. Morgan and many others. The Morgan is currently out of the water for restoration - the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty and magnitude of her hull.

Some drawing experience is preferred for this class. Classes will break for a one-hour lunch each day. A list of required art supplies can be found at the Mystic Arts Center's web site.

Workshop Fee:MSM or MAC members: $115
 General Public: $140

(Includes admission to Mystic Seaport Museum; lunch and supplies are at participant's own expense)

Registration is required, no later than October 2. To register or for questions, contact the Education Department, Mystic Arts Center: education@mysticarts.org, or (860)536-7601 x209.
