Whaleboat Exhibit
In order to properly display and protect the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, it was decided that a new granite wharf should be built on the site of the Morgan's old pier. This wharf is modeled after the granite wharves the Morgan knew in New Bedford and has been adapted for our use here. The overall dimensions are 150 feet by 100 feet, which means that the Morgan can be moored along all three sides for equal effects and for seasonal protection.
The funds to build this very worthwhile addition to our waterfront were given in memory of Hendon Chubb by his family. Mr. Chubb was a forceful leader of the insurance managing firm of Chubb and Son of New York.
A fully-equipped whaleboat is on display in a shed on Chubb's Wharf (#34 on map). The building, patterned after buildings on several of New Bedford's whaling wharves, was constructed in 1982. The whaleboat came to Mystic aboard the Charles W. Morgan in 1941. It is not known whether it was ever actually used, though it was likely built before 1920. The boat contains the gear typically carried in American whaleboats of the 1880s. The Mystic Seaport publication, The Whaleboat, 1850-1970: A Study of Design, Construction and Use, offers a full exposition of these boats.
