The Mystic Seaport PILOT Program

*** Save the Date: Spring PILOTs Weekend - May 8-9 ***

"Waves of change and tides of time
May crash upon our shore -
We work to preserve this place,
Our history ever more."

~ Ms. Stewart Hamilton, Pilot

Fall 2009 PILOTSEstablished in 1973, the Mystic Seaport PILOT program was designed to give members a greater understanding of the Museum's day-to-day operations. Working as a team to accomplish a variety of work projects, PILOTS receive special insight and behind the scenes views of Mystic Seaport as they work along side Museum staff for a Spring and/or Fall weekend each year. Since its inception, the program has grown to over 275 pilots who contribute more than 1300 hours of service annually.

As extraordinary supporters and advocates for the mission of Mystic Seaport, PILOTS participate in an assortment of on-grounds projects ranging from thought provoking research to challenging active work. Many of the Museum's seasonal and often unglamorous chores are completed by this wonderful group of dedicated workers. All areas of the Museum welcome and greatly appreciate the help provided by the PILOTS. Past years' projects have included:

  • Transcribing historic letters
  • Historic research
  • Shingling buildings
  • Gardening
  • Painting buildings and fences
  • Small crafts projects
  • Repairing docks and floats
  • Scraping and painting vessels
  • Sewing costumes
  • Cleaning exhibits and belowdecks

PILOTS DinnerAfter a Saturday of hard work, PILOTS are treated to cocktails, music and a delicious dinner followed by an informative presentation by Museum staff. On Sunday, PILOTS are free to worship in the Fishtown Chapel at a special Pilot chapel service or take a behind the scenes Museum tour.

PILOT participation fees are in addition to annual membership dues and are designed to cover food and other fees incurred by the Museum to sponsor the event.
