Joan Gordon: Navigate to Latitude 41º for fine gourmet dining

When Mystic Seaport decided to revamp operations at its venerable Seamen's Inne Restaurant, they chose locally-owned Coastal Gourmet (a division of Mystic Market) to accomplish the task. Coastal, which also runs Aspen in Old Saybrook, did an excellent job. They renamed the place Latitude 41º, and you can program your GPS accordingly.

Latitude 41º's dining areas have been pleasantly transformed. New carpeting, pale gray-green trim and large black and white photographs of sailing ships provide a backdrop for the extraordinary galley creations. There is also a tent by the river for al fresco dining.

A generous bowl of exquisite asparagus soup awakened our senses. It arrived garnished with a few kernels of chili-spiced popcorn (I would have loved more). New England clam chowder was thick and creamy, but not cloying. Clam essence asserted itself in every spoonful... <Read the full review>
