Anchor Watch: Overnight Youth Group Program
Friday or Saturday night, March - May and September - November
Anchor Watch was created to extend the mission of the Joseph Conrad, to educate youth on the ways and traditions of sailing, to the weekends. The Ship to Shore School Group Overnight program utilizes the Conrad during the school week and the Conrad Sailing Camp provides a unique experience for youth in the Summer. In the Fall of 1990, the Anchor Watch program began. During the Fall and Spring youth groups and scout groups could come to Mystic Seaport on Friday nights to participate in the program. The program grew very quickly becoming so popular a waiting list often formed. So in the late 1990's the Anchor Watch program was expanded to Saturday nights as well.
Groups arrived at 7:00 pm beginning their adventure with an introduction to Mystic Seaport and an evening walk through the recreated 19th-Century Village. After the tour, participants enjoyed an evening snack, made a sailor's craft and then slept aboard one of three historic ships. After a good night's sleep, the groups were fed breakfast in the Galley Restaurant, taught how to climb the rigging of the Joseph Conrad (a one-of-a-kind experience), and then toured the Museum on their own for the remainder of the day. Each participant received a special Mystic Seaport patch, commemorating their experience.
Starting in 2007, the program expanded to provide multiple learning opportunities to scout groups. The program was so successful that additional programs for each level of scouting were created. The original program, now called "A Taste of History", still continues today.
Today, Anchor Watch remains one of the most popular programs offered by Mystic Seaport providing participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience they never forget.
