On September 27, 2008, more than 200 Museum trustees, members, staff, supporters and visitors gathered in the main shop of the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard to kick off the three-year, $5 million restoration project of the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. View the celebration.

Geoff Nelson, a representative of Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell, read a proclamation from the Governor declaring September 27, 2008, as "Charles W. Morgan Day" in Connecticut.

Featured speaker Dr. Ray Ashley, executive director of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, discussed the Morgan's restoration project on a level that extends beyond the duPont Preservation Shipyard. Ashley's comments (which you can read here) truly set the stage for this project that is national in scope.

After Ashley's speech, Museum Chairman Dick Vietor introduced award-winning actor Brian Dennehy, who brought the celebration to a rousing end. Dennehy, who lives in Connecticut and is an avid sailor, read two passages; words from Charles W. Morgan himself, as well as words from a harpooner aboard an early Morgan voyage. Read those passages here.
