As a student at the Art League in New York, James Mitchell studied to be an illustrator, but a summer voyage to Nantucket began his career as a free-lance painter. In a rambling sea life he was twice shipwrecked, finally buying an old cabin cruiser for use as a studio. This boat was towed to Martha's Vineyard and became a home. Many summers were spent on the island. A collector of wooden boats, he currently owns several at his home in Connecticut.
