The First Edition of this bibliography appeared privately and most informally in 1951, prepared primarily for use in my graduate and undergraduate courses in Oceanic History (maritime and naval) at Harvard. It originated in the desire to systematize the oral advice given down through the years to hundreds of students seeking suggestions as to how to get started on their term papers, senior theses, seminar reports or PhD theses. The effort has been to guide the student toward virgin subjects or at least toward topics that have not been done to death. Consequently, the sea history has been presented in its widest ramifications. The impetus for the Second Edition in 1955 came from the wish to meet the needs of the new Munson Institute of American Maritime History at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. The Third Edition was brought out in 1963, followed by two Supplements in 1966 and 1968. This present cumulative Fourth Edition combines those last three with new works appearing between 1968 and mid-1971.
