Scouts and youth groups experience the thrill of sleeping aboard the tall ship Joseph Conrad when participating in the Museum’s Anchor Watch program.

A Seaport Sampler

All ages, available for Boy and Girl Scouts
$75 per person

The Seaport Sampler program offers a glimpse into life in 1876. Taking a nighttime tour of the Museum grounds, you’ll discover what life was like in a seaport town, and learn about some of the seaside professions of the past. You will also get to spend some time aboard an historic vessel, learning about its history as well as hearing stories about life at sea. The tour is followed up with a pizza snack and a hands-on activity, where your Scouts will get to create their very own sailor’s craft, just like the sailors of the past would have at sea. After a good night’s sleep aboard the historic square-rigged Joseph Conrad, we will have breakfast and get to climb the rigging of the Conrad if weather permits, before your group is free to explore Mystic Seaport for the rest of the day.

Navigation, Maps and Compasses

Cub Scouts, ages 7 and older
$80 per person

Scouts can explore the world of maps and the stars! Begin the evening with a nighttime tour of the Museum grounds, and learn what life was like in 1876. You’ll get to spend some time aboard an historic vessel, learning about its history as well as hearing stories about life at sea. Then it’s off to the Treworgy Planetarium for a private star show, where you’ll learn how sailors used the night sky to help navigate the seven seas. Following a pizza snack, Scouts will get to see and handle many different types of maps and learn how the different parts of the map provide information. You will also get the chance to make your own maps and learn how a compass helps you find your way.

After a good night’s sleep aboard the historic square-rigged Joseph Conrad, we will have breakfast and get to climb the rigging of the Conrad if weather permits, before your group is free to explore Mystic Seaport for the rest of the day.

A Sailor’s Life

Scouts, come earn a badge at Mystic Seaport!Cub Scouts, ages 8 and older
$80 per person

This program gives older Scouts a feel for what a sailor’s life was like in 1876. First, the Scouts get a nighttime tour of the Museum grounds and get to explore some of the different trades that existed in a seaport town and hear stories about life at sea. Then it’s off to the Treworgy Planetarium for an hour-long program on the night sky presented by one of our trained planetarium staff. Following a pizza snack, Scouts get to practice their rope skills and learn how to tie a variety of common knots used on land and at sea, such as a square knot, bowline, and sheet bend.

After a good night’s sleep aboard the historic square-rigged Joseph Conrad, we will have breakfast and get to climb the rigging of the Conrad if weather permits, before your group is free to explore Mystic Seaport for the rest of the day.

Seaport Sleuths

Junior and Cadet Girl Scouts, ages 7-10
$75 per person

Begin your evening by putting on your detective hats, while taking a private tour of the Museum grounds after hours. Here, you will work to solve a mystery at Mystic Seaport and use your sleuthing skills to interpret a crime scene and shake down one of our exhibits. Following a pizza break, Scouts will go back to our Crime Lab and analyze the evidence to crack the case, while learning how to read and write Morse code, analyze different styles of handwriting, and take and examine different fingerprint patterns before heading off to sleep onboard the historic square-rigged ship, the Joseph Conrad.

Destination Outer Space

Juniors, Cadets, and Senior Girl Scouts, ages 8 and older
$80 per person

Begin your evening by taking a private tour of the Museum grounds and discover what life was like in a seaport town in 1876. You’ll get to explore one of our historic vessels, and hear about the important roles that women played in seaside communities. Then it’s off to our Treworgy Planetarium for an hour-long program on the night sky presented by one of our trained planetarium staff. Following a pizza snack, if the weather permits, you’ll be able to use one of the Mystic Seaport telescopes to view, firsthand, the evening sky, before heading off to sleep onboard the historic square-rigged ship, the Joseph Conrad. In the event of overcast or poor weather, Scouts will get to create their very own sailor’s craft such as lanyards or scrimshaw.
