This data dictionary is an example of "metadata" or data about data, and is the definitions of the fields that already exist in our current system as well as the fields and functions that we would like to implement in our new system. We began looking at this metadata primarily to determine how our information should work for us, but found the exercise to be equally valuable for the discussion of how our different collections view similar information in sometimes very different ways. The conversations that we have had, and the decisions that we have made during this data dictionary process will go a long way to determining how data from one collecting area should be mapped to data from another. This mapping is essential to creating an integrated information system.
