In 1998, Mystic Seaport applied for, and was the only museum to receive, one of six awards from the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition.
The focus of this project is to digitize materials from the museum's collections (primarily library materials) that relate to maritime westward expansion, and to make those materials available online. |

| In 1998, the G. W. Blunt Library at Mystic Seaport also applied for a Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant to begin digitizing library materials that relate to merchant shipping in the 19th century, primarily ship registers, and to make those materials available online. | ![]() |

In 1999, Mystic Seaport in collaboration with the Connecticut Historical Society and the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center of the University of Connecticut, received an IMLS (The Institute of Museum and Library Services) grant to digitize images pertaining to Connecticut history, to develop related curriculum materials, and to make all of it available online. |
