The R.J. Schaefer Exhibit Hall is the Museum’s special exhibition gallery. Dedicated on June 7, 1975, as a tribute to Rudolph J. Schaefer, the building is home to changing exhibitions of Mystic Seaport’s collections of maritime art and artifacts, and to loan exhibitions from other museums and private collections.
Outside the R.J. Schaefer Building is the Wimpfheimer Terrace of Sea Sculpture. It is named for local manufacturer Clarence A. Wimpfheimer. The bronze sculptures currently on view are “Boy Feeding Seagulls” by Charles Parks (1976) and “Touch Me” by Katherine Tod Johnstone in memory of Eleanor Bartram Radley. Nearer the waterfront is the fountain and sculpture “Three Dolphins” by Dorothy Bostwick Campbell (1965) in memory of Elinor D. Johnston.
