A 70th Anniversary for the Charles W. Morgan

Mark your calendars… where will you be for the first week of November? Mystic Seaport and Mystic, CT of course!

In just one month’s time we’ll celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Charles W. Morgan coming up-river to Mystic Seaport with a full week of activities at the Museum and in Mystic to mark this historic moment for both the town and Mystic Seaport. Most certainly, the course of local history was changed with the Museum’s decision to accept the Morgan into its collection. And for generations, Mystic Seaport has put the Morgan front and center for America to see and appreciate. Now, with the restoration well underway, we can more easily observe the work in the Shipyard as the focus shifts from the interior work in the hold (now nearly complete) to the external work: stem, bulwarks, and planking.

An engaged local effort, supported by a large representative committee headed by Mystic residents Melinda Carlisle and Searle Field, has planned a celebration fitting for such an iconic vessel. Some of the highlights include:

Friday, Oct. 28 – Fireworks at Mystic Seaport.
Saturday, Nov. 5 – Mystic Seaport Celebration
- Free admission to all
- Special demonstrations and presentations all day
- Ceremony at the Morgan at 1 p.m.
- “Prince of Whalers” benefit performance starring Brian Dennehy, Joe Grifasi and Linda Hart. Limited seating; tickets required.
All Week – Free concerts and events at Mystic River Park plus special menus and discounts at participating restaurants as part of Mystic Restaurant Week. More activities are in the works and teh complete schedule will be posted at www.sailthemorgan.org.

In the meantime, as you prepare for all the Morgan hoopla, please be sure to take in the ever-popular Chowder Days this coming weekend and a new event this year, Sight & Frights. Our new exhibit Neptune’s Orchestra: Songs of the Seafarer opens on Oct. 8 and is sure to be another resounding success from our Exhibitions Department, following on the heels of Skin & Bones. Fall is a magnificent time to enjoy all that Mystic Seaport has to offer, and we look forward to seeing you around the grounds.

To all the members who attended the Annual Meeting of the Members on Sept. 23, thank you for joining us in the River Room. The new format and day seemed to be to your liking (despite the rain!) with a recent-history attendance record of 200 members, including some truly special milestone member celebrations of 60, 65, and even 70! years of membership. Congratulations all and THANK YOU for your loyalty!
