After exploring Mystic Seaport on foot, leave it in your wake.

We have many rare and historic boats you can climb aboard at Mystic Seaport. Even better, we also have several you can ride aboard or pilot yourself. Take a waterfront tour aboard one of our launches. Charter a sail on board a Herreshoff ketch or spend the day relaxing underneath a historic catboat’s billowing sail. Rent a classic wooden rowboat or sailboat and explore the river firsthand. Before you leave Mystic Seaport be sure to see the Museum from an entirely different vantage point!

Ways to explore the Mystic River:

Schooner Brilliant

Set sail on a new adventure aboard schooner BRILLIANT.Experience the adventure and challenge of sailing a 61-foot schooner with a group of your family and friends. Visit quiet anchorages and popular tourist destinations along the New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts coasts and islands while learning to sail a classic vessel.

Summer Teen Program: Up to eight teenagers, plus a group leader, can charter Brilliant for an educational voyage during the summer. Learn how to sail a classic vessel while developing team-building skills. Participants haul on the lines, steer the vessel, learn navigation, help in the galley, and stand watch. Fall Adult Charters: Brilliant sails are available for any of our scheduled fall dates, provided that space is available. If you charter Brilliant, please bear in mind that we must have at least six able hands, fit and agile, to run the boat safely. Charters are limited to eight adults. Learn more and book a charter.

Waterfront Tour

See Mystic Seaport from a different vantage point while enjoying a Waterfront Tour aboard the launch Necessity or Liberty. Tickets are $4 per passenger for ages 6 and older (children ages 5 and younger ride for free) and can be purchased at the Sabino ticket booth.


Boathouse Rentals: Rowboats and Sailboats

Rent a small craft from the Museum's Boathouse and explore the Mystic River on your own.

Rent a wooden rowboat or small sailboat and take your own personal tour of the historic Mystic River. Traditional small craft from the Museum’s collection are available for rent to qualified boaters.


Rowboats (up to 5 people and a dog per boat)

  • 30-minute rental — member: $7 / non-member: $10
  • 60-minute rental — member: $10 / non-member: $15

Sailboats (number of passengers depends on boat)

  • 60-minute rental — member: $15 / non-member: $20

Boathouse Ride: Breck Marshall

Enjoy a sail aboard the 20-foot Crosby catboat reproduction, the BRECK MARSHALL.

The Breck Marshall, a 20-foot Crosby catboat reproduction, provides a unique adventure beneath her billowing sail. During a smooth and quiet ride, passengers relax in her roomy cockpit while the skipper identifies points of interest on the Mystic River shoreline.

Breck Marshall offers 30-minute rides, weather permitting, and sails run between 10:30 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are sold at the Boathouse. Museum admission is required. Limit 6 passengers per voyage.

Boathouse Charters: AidaAraminta, and Brilliant

The Herreshoff-designed ketch ARAMINTA is available for day charters in Fishers Island Sound.

Steamboat Sabino is presently undergoing a major restoration in the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. The majority of Sabino’s restoration will be complete by early summer 2016 when she will be launched back into the water; however, the vessel will operate as a dockside exhibit for the foreseeable future until her boiler is replaced. Follow the restoration on our Shipyard Blog.

Trim Again and Encore Cruises

Take a cruise down the Mystic River aboard the wooden catboat TRIM AGAIN. Spend a day on the water with Mystic Seaport member and local resident Captain Jack Spratt as your guide. Private charters are available April through November for you and your guests aboard Captain Jack’s wooden catboat Trim Again and his classic 30′ wooden motor yacht Encore.

Tours depart from Mystic Seaport or Watch Hill, Rhode Island, and all proceeds benefit the Museum. More cruise information.
