Christian was twelve years old when he began training under professional artist and illustrator Marit Guild, learning the foundations of representational art. After high school, Marit recommended that he continue his education at her Alma Mater, Pensacola Christian College, under the tutelage of Society of Illustrators member Mr. Brian Jeke. Which is exactly what he did and graduated in 2010, Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Arts with a concentration in commercial art. He has been working as a professional artist since then, painting every day in his studio, teaching several private students on a weekly basis, and also hosting the occasional workshops. He is currently represented by Cutter and Cutter Fine Art Galleries in St. Augustine, Florida, and Mary Martin Fine Art Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina.
As an artist, Christian wants his work not only to be technically masterful but also to engage the viewer’s mind. His artistic influences include great past American, Russian, and European masters including John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, William Bouguereau, and Ilya Repin, as well as contemporary masters such as Richard Schmid, Mian Situ, Christopher Blossom, and Daniel Gerhartz. These artists exemplify the union of technique and narrative that I also hope to achieve. The inspiration for my landscapes comes primarily from the Florida Gulf Coast where Christian grew up and still resides. One of his greatest pleasures in life is to set up a travel easel at a beach, port, or marina, and paint away the morning or afternoon with the sights, smells, and sounds of the Gulf Coast enveloping his senses. From oil production ships in port under lowering clouds to a cluster of Live Oaks at the National Seashore under the deep azure of a cloudless summer sky, he loves it all.
As Christian’s career continues to unfold, his desire is to create increasingly masterful and intellectually compelling art. Technique alone is not the sole objective; the concept or story behind the painting is of paramount importance. Art is communication of the artist’s message through a visual medium; the way the pigment is applied clarifies that message and makes it attractive. During his art career he has been privileged and honored to be included and win awards in many regional and national exhibitions. These include: The Oil Painters of America National and Regional Exhibitions (2014, 2015); Second Place. Oil Painters of America Spring Online Showcase (2014); Finalist and Second Place. FASO Boldbrush Competition (2013, 2014, 2015); Finalist. Art Renewal Center’s Annual Salon (2014, 2015) Finalist. Paint the Parks (2009, 2013) Second Place. Southwest Art Magazine’s 21 Under 31 Competition (2010) Finalist. Plein Air Salon Competition (2011) Finalist. Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art (2012, 2013).
