Mark Hunter

Mark is a contemporary realist painter who creates coastal, landscape, marine, portrait, and figurative works in oil. In is work, he attempts to achieve an illusion of three-dimensional depth, atmosphere, and luminosity that represents nature.

Primarily a studio painter, Mark considers his plein air and figurative paintings from life as studies for his larger studio works. He believes that painting from life is extremely important for the representational artist because there are many areas of observation that are available from life that are not available from a photograph. As a result, it helps achieve his goal. All his landscape paintings are inspired by the rural areas near his home, as well as scenes encountered during his travels.

Mark’s sailing experience includes sailing on his father’s sailboat off Sandy Hook, sailing J24’s in New York Harbor, as a member of the Manhattan Sailing Club; extended cruises on Chesapeake Bay and the Virgin Islands, as well as, having the opportunity to crew on a boat in the Antigua Classic Regatta. Mark’s coastal and seascape paintings are inspired by scenes observed while on these trips.

Mark began his art training studying the human form in life drawing sessions at the Art Students League, and he still enjoys painting the figure from life. He considers the human being as the most beautiful yet most challenging of all art genres, capturing both the likeness and the soul of the subject to be the elusive goal.

In 2018, Mark’s marine paintings were accepted into two exhibitions at the Salmagundi Club and one at the Ridgewood Art Institute. His work is represented at the Design Domaine Gallery in Spring Lake, NJ; the La Vie Galerie in Livingston, NJ; and the Studio Montclair KW Gallery in Montclair, NJ.
