Edwin Rudd

Edwin Rudd was born in Kentucky, but grew up mostly in Connecticut where he graduated high school receiving the award for “Most Artistic.” He continued his study in Florida at the Ringling School of Art, then at the Nantucket School of Design and the Arts, where he undoubtedly developed his passion for portraying the architecture and the seafaring life of New England.

Since 1993, Edwin has established himself as one of the foremost tutors and watercolorists in his wife’s home country of New Zealand and more recently, Nantucket. Edwin’s watercolor work has cultivated into intense studies of light and shade – the warm and cool of shadows particularly obvious in his landscape painting, are equally expressed in his ethereal depictions of the human form. His masterly control of the watercolor medium is truly undisputed. He divides his time painting and tutoring between his two ‘home’ countries, New Zealand and America, always carrying with him the inspiration and originality that is instantly recognizable as his very own.

His unique tutoring style sees his students return to his workshops time after time. These years have also witnessed an impressive and substantial body of work and an extensive exhibition history, including the award for Best Overall Painting at the 1998 Royal Easter Show in Auckland, New Zealand. Also the Supreme Award winner at the Franklin Arts Festival, New Zealand and in 2009 was the overall winner of the Peoples’s Choice Juried Show at the Artists Association of Nantucket. Since living on Nantucket Island he was accepted into the Artists Association of Nantucket and in 2006 and 2008 he received the prestigious C. Robert Perrin Award for Excellence in Watercolor; the Most Promising Artist Award 2007; and the En Plein Air Painting Award in 2010.

Edwin exhibits at the Gallery at 35 Main St, Nantucket, MA; the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, and he is a member of the Salmagundi Club, New York, NY and Copley Society, Boston, MA.
