Scrimshaw: Then and Now
Quentin Snediker’s presentation will provide an overview of the origins of what we think of today as “scrimshaw,” followed by a brief review of the scrimshaw collection at Mystic Seaport Museum. Quentin will reveal early influences on his work, providing examples of inspirational works, then move on to describe the step-by-step process he uses to create a modern version of traditional works. Examples of whale teeth and other ivory specimens, as well as influential publications on the topic, will be on hand for participants to examine. Lastly, he will address the legal implications of the sale and purchase of modern scrimshaw and other ivory products.
