Members Only Gallery Talk: “The Vikings Begin”

Staff, cremation grave 85 Cremation grave 85 in Valsgärde is believed to be erected over a woman with both high social and religious status. The staff, made from bone, has been found together with the woman in the grave and is dated to the 10th century. The top of the staff is adorned with an animal head carved out of the bone. From what is left of the staff today it is in its entirety 105mm long, which is measured from the bottom of the staff to the top of the head, and of this the head is approximately 53mm.
