900 HANDS!

Imagine 450 volunteers showing up at the front door of your home within a span of eight days ready to tackle whatever needs the greatest attention: painting, gardening, docks, cataloging, collection care, boat preparation, “attic” cleaning, filing, and the like.

That’s what Mystic Seaport experienced in early May, thanks to our PILOTS and the Tourism Cares volunteers. A recent record of 110 PILOTS turned out for their annual spring weekend, following on the heels of 350 Tourism Cares volunteers. If you do the math, that’s more than 900 hands dedicated to sprucing up the Museum. Never has more been accomplished over the span of eight days to prepare for the summer season. Such is the power of the tradition of volunteerism at Mystic Seaport and at so many non-profits across the nation. We are enormously grateful for, and indeed dependent upon, all the many hours of dedicated and skillful service the Museum receives annually from volunteers who assist the staff in caring for the Museum’s assets and for truly enhancing the visitor experience. Thanks to you all!

So we stand ready – more than ever – for the upcoming early season highlights: The Sea Music Festival and The WoodenBoat Show. These now classic events showcase key elements of the maritime tradition and demonstrate the depth of knowledge and expertise in the regional, national, and international maritime community. They are weekends of celebration for the informed and inspiration for those newer to the traditions of song and wood. It is Mystic Seaport at its very best: bringing together leaders in these fields in such a manner as to inform the public as well as satisfy the scholar’s and practitioner’s need to be among other like-minded and skilled souls. How fortunate our members are to have these two significant, nationally-recognized maritime gatherings right here at their home!

In the spirit of music, don’t miss the special River Jazz concert on June 18. Critically-acclaimed jazz musician Wycliffe Gordon and his Quintet return to the Museum waterfront for a sunset concert by the Mystic River. Pack a picnic basket, bring your folding chair, and be prepared for a magical evening.

June is our celebration of maritime traditions. Join us and bring a friend (or two)!
