Mystic, Conn. (May 8, 2017) — Mystic Seaport will kick off the start of the summer season over Memorial Day weekend with Salute to Summer, a celebration of the best New England has to offer when the weather turns warm.
The event runs Saturday and Sunday, May 27-28, and includes historic games and activities, boat rides, planetarium shows, and toy boat building. The weekend concludes Monday, May 29 with the Museum’s traditional Decoration Day observance.
The Museum’s historic interpretation staff has lined up a series of 19th-century activities for the entire family, where they can take part in vintage lawn games, run relay races, and try walking on stilts. People can even take a turn at the oars of a whaleboat.
Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the water as the Museum’s boat rental dock will be open, where they can rent a rowboat or small sailboat to explore the Mystic River. In addition, a motor launch and the sailboat Breck Marshall will be operating a regular schedule of brief cruises.
On Monday, the Museum will hold its annual Decoration Day ceremony. Known today as Memorial Day, Decoration Day was formally instituted by the U.S. Government in 1868 as a day of national remembrance of those killed during the Civil War. Costumed role-players will reenact an 1876 tribute and procession to honor the fallen in the Civil War beginning at 10:30 a.m.
