Internships at Mystic Seaport Museum

New England Black and Indigenous Maritime Histories Summer Internship

Summer Internship with the Frank C. Munson Institute of Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport Museum

Apply for the 2024 Internship here.

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking applicants for the 2024 New England Black and Indigenous Maritime Histories Summer Internship. This interdisciplinary internship engages with BIPOC (Black and Indigenous People of Color) maritime histories and contemporary communities through academic exploration and hands-on practice in public engagement, curation, and community conversations. The program benefits students with interest in museum careers as well as students who aspire to positions of leadership in community and responsibility in other fields such as education, business, government, and more.

Museum Interpretation
Twice a week, interns will join the interpretation team for the Museum’s new exhibit, Entwined: Freedom, Sovereignty, and the Sea. Opening in Spring 2024, Entwined re-weaves a narrative of Indigenous and African-descended maritime cultures whose histories are forever interwoven in the stories of freedom, sovereignty and the sea. Interns will act as interpreters in Entwined, facilitating visitor conversations and educational experiences in the gallery, as well as develop skills in public engagement and historical interpretation.

Museum Collections + Curation
Interns will also join the Museum’s Collections and Research team one and half days a week to work on collections management, research, or curatorial projects. Through these projects, interns will be able to directly work with historic and contemporary Belongings and collections, as well as develop skills in collections care and management, object handling, curatorial research and project development, and archival work.

Professional Development
Interns will participate in a weekly museum studies course, exploring museum theory, procedures, and ethics. This course will engage interns in readings and discussion on critical topics in the museum field. As part of this course, interns will participate in weekly field seminars to regional museums, archives, and cultural institutions to speak with practitioners and scholars around New England. Interns will also engage with the 2024 Munson Institute Fellows on field seminars and in the classroom, learning with and from each other throughout the summer.

There are four internships available for Summer 2024. Selected interns will receive a $6250 stipend and free onsite housing. The summer internship period will run for 10 weeks from June 3 – August 9, 2024.
